Black Friday began as workers called in sick after Thanksgiving to get an extra day off. Since businesses were open, many “out sick” got a head start on their Christmas shopping.
Now Black Friday is the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Stores open up late Thanksgiving evening or early Friday morning and welcome shoppers who have stood in line for hours.
